Homeschooling Adventures: Halloween DIY UFO Project

Hi guys :) welcome to another homeschooling adventure post! This week I’m sharing our DIY UFO Halloween costume. My kiddo is obsessed with outer space, if you’ve read any of the other homeschooling adventure posts then you know how much he enjoys learning about the wonders of the universe. I even made an entire curriculum for him based on the theme of space.

His outfit last year was pretty cute, it was an alien holding him. This year he wanted to do the same outfit, but he wanted a UFO to go with it. I began doing research to find a UFO and came across videos on TikTok where they made UFOs out of clear umbrellas, tape, lights, and streamers. I let my ex-husband know what Killian wanted to do, so he grabbed the materials while me and my fiancée built the UFO. Killian helped us too. Teamwork style lol.

It took a total of 6 hours to get everything done, though we had to take a break while my fiancé walked to Walmart to grab more tape. We live about 30 minutes from Walmart by foot, so we like to walk instead of taking the transit system or driving, but enough about all that.

How to Build a UFO

Step One open the boxes completely and open the umbrella. Line up the boxes to make sure they will fit around the umbrella. (I used 4 of the size 7x7x6 box from USPS, they were free.)

Step Two, heat up the hot glue gun. Glue the box flaps to the umbrella. If you use USPS boxes, one box covers two spaces on the umbrella. There will be a total of 4 boxes for the 8 spaces needed.

Step Three: Take the roof sealant tape and tape it to the umbrella where the boxes are glued to the umbrella. Be very careful, the roof sealant is veryyyy sticky.

Step Four: Take Aluminum Foil Tape and cut strips long enough to cover each box. I placed mine horizontal.

Step Five: I completely forgot to take pictures of how to do this step, but the next step is to fill the gaps of the UFO to make it look more like UFOy lol. The aluminum foil tape is a must have for this step because it is very malleable and you can shape it.

This is as far as we made it for now, we used it on top of our wonder wagon for when Killian got tired of walking while we were out doing our annual downtown event that was held on the 17th. However, we plan on putting led lights and streamers on it for Halloween day. We were limited on time; we put this together on the day of the event!

**Side note, I have major social anxiety, but being in the among us costume helped a ton, however, it did bring a lot of attention lol. If you have troubles going out, blow up costumes are, in my opinion, great :)

We hope everyone has an amazing spooky fun filled Halloween <3
